Art and design are very subjective as the old saying goes,”beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. They can be interpreted in many ways and the suggestions below are starting points upon which to begin your creative process.

When you have completed a work that you are happy with, scan or photograph the image and upload it to the forum along with your name and school and a brief analysis of what you used for media, what you believed worked most effectively and why.

Starting ideas

  • In small sections – approx 10x10cm squares, complete a series of detail drawings of body. Experiment using different or mixed media in some – do not do it all in pencil!
  • Compose a new image by starting with an A4 size photo from a newspaper or magazine and add other images from magazines onto this collage. For example, take a face, but add the eyes from other images over the original face.
  • Set up a Still Life of at least 4 objects   (an arrangement of the things you have chosen)
    1 metallic,  1organic, 1 soft and 1 man-made object must be included.
Make sure there is a strong light from one angle (near a window or lamp). Draw each object so that its texture/material is shown. You must use at least 3 media in the drawing – ink, pencil, fineliner, paint, collage paper, etc.
  • Choose an interesting larger format black and white image from a newspaper or print off an image in black and white. Glue the image onto a larger sheet, then use pencil, watercolours or fineliner pens to accentuate some areas, and also extend some of the areas of the image beyond the edge onto the paper, creating your own new version.
  • Use a mirror, and complete a self-portrait using ONLY line. No tone or shading. This must be as big as A3 sheet.
  • Find an aluminium can, crunch it up a bit, and do a series of drawings using at least 2 media in each.  Ensure you include some of the MAIN text on can as well. Choose the best work to upload.
  • Take a pumpkin, capsicum, melon or pomegranate and cut it in half. Draw or paint the various sections, and simplify or exaggerate the internal features.
  • Put a pile of shoes/boots in view, close together and make a stack. They could be football boots,  motorcycle boots, ballet toe shoes, etc. Draw an interesting section of these – a detail area drawn on large paper. Redraw this design no bigger than A4, keep it to clear outlines, with no detail in the shapes or areas, and no tonal work or shading. Use a range of solid flat colours in some areas to develop an abstract design.
